LIST PICK
GEOWULF LONELY
In new single ‘Lonely’, Geowulf’s Star Kendrick reflects on the state of singledom and how she’s learnt to embrace it. As the artist states, this song is “A bold and welcomed acceptance of myself and my own company. Feeling less and less like I need the approval of others. That’s one of the many nice things about getting a bit older.” For this coming-of-age number, the video sets its sights on Star as she undresses down to the bare minimum, becoming one with the white background and singular white chair, as a powerful act of total surrender. As the storyline progresses and our chanteuse comes to accept herself more and more, the white light refracts to reveal hidden colours. Throughout, we return to the same statement, “I’d rather be lonely, / Than alone in love.” It’s a piece of simple enough wisdom and yet is something it takes many of us a lifetime to discover. The flower-child aesthetic of the wah-wah guitars and starry-eyed chimes is a marked changed from Geowulf’s first album, Great Big Blue, and so far we’re loving the evolution - both sonically and spiritually. More to come on the upcoming sophomore album, My Resignation, which will be out on October 25th, via PIAS. - Hannah Thacker
